Pablo Picasso’s sinuous 1932 lilac-hued painting of his mistress, “Nude, Green Leaves and Bust,” fetched $106.5 million tonight at Christie’s International in New York, the highest amount ever paid for an artwork at auction. The price surpassed the $104.2 million record set at Sotheby’s in New York in 2004 for a 1905 Picasso painting, “Garcon a la Pipe.” And it exceeded the 65 million pounds, or $103.4 million, achieved for Giacometti’s “Walking Man I” in February at Sotheby’s in London. Tonight’s Picasso had been projected to fetch between $70 million and $90 million. The painting sold to an undisclosed bidder on the telephone. The record bid came during an Impressionist and modern-art sale. The 69 lots on offer were estimated to fetch as much as $368.3 million.
