Rihanna is certainly not the first musician to push the boundaries of what is acceptable and what is not when it comes to album covers.
In fact India's very own singer-item girl Sherlyn Chopra decided to something quite outrageous for her debut album,
appropriately called 'Outrageous'. This is what media reports quoted Sherlyn as saying about her provocative cover shoot:
"If you have a great body, flaunt it. I mean not every woman can boast of a good body. I wanted to do a topless
photograph for my album. But I have covered by breast with my hands. I think
Mamta Kulkarni had done a 'topless' cover when I was a kid."

While pop star Janet Jackson's infamous wardrobe malfunction during the Super Bowl halftime performance may have been accidental,
there was nothing unplanned about the topless cover of her 2004 album 'Damita Jo' (titled after Jackson's middle name).
A spokesman for Janet's record label Virgin defended the cover that showed her wearing only low-rise jeans,
with her arms wrapped around her shadow-bathed breasts. "She just wanted a simple and youthful picture
that she felt people would like. It's beautiful, soft. So far, fans love it. The Web
sites have been going crazy," the spokesman was quoted as saying.

Janet had also stripped down for the cover of her 2001 release 'All for You'. The tracks inside were just as suggestive.
'Would You Mind', 'Love Scene' and the title track all continued the sex-obsessed turn that Janet's career had first
taken with 'Velvet Rope'. The album became Jackson's fifth consecutive album to debut atop the Billboard 200 chart,
selling 605,000 units in its opening week, and shipped over 1.8 million units in its first week in the US.

'Stripped', the title of Christina Aguilera's second English studio album in 2002, was supposed to refer to her emotional state. But she also chose to make it her physical state by going topless for the album cover, where the only nod to discretion is some strategically placed hair. It was a conscious departure from Christina's old sound and her 'super-clean, cookie-cutter' image. |
