Intimate moments of reality TV
Thanks to bombshells like Sherlyn Chopra and Rakhi Sawant, Reality TV in India looks all set to explode. After the glitz and glamour of 'Rakhi ka Swayamvar' on NDTV Imagine, it's now the turn of Sherlyn Chopra on Bigg Boss 3 to turn on the heat. Superstar Amitabh Bachchan's sobering presence notwithstanding, Sherlyn made her intentions clear on Day 1 itself. Unhappy with her tight-fitting choli, she was seen asking fellow housemate Poonam Dhillon to untie it. Will this be a clarion call for the other glam gals on the show - Shamita Shetty, Aditi Gowitrikar and Claudia Ciesla? Only time will tell...
If screen grabs from the popular NDTV Imagine show 'Pati, Patni aur Woh' are anything to go by, Rakhi Sawant and Elesh Parujanwala are not letting rumours about a break-up affect their relationship. The two have certainly not been shy about public display of affection and even shared their first full-blown kiss in front of the cameras. Love is no child's play for these 'Baby Borrowers'!
'Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao' could be among the 'cleanest' reality shows to hit Indian television in recent times. The show established its 'spotless' image by getting women celebrities to bathe as frequently as possible. Everyone took a dip - from the voluptuous Negar Khan to the demure Shweta Tewari, all in the interest of good hygiene of course...
Besides the unadulterated charms of Negar Khan and Shweta Tewari, 'Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao' also had singer Anaida, small screen actress Mona Vasu (who eventually won the Grand Finale) and item girl Kashmira Shah cooling off in a bikini.
Model and actress Payal Rohatgi did not disappoint those looking for eyecandy on Bigg Boss 2. After a sedate first three weeks in the House, Payal suddenly went into an overdrive from the fourth week onwards. Her male housemates, especially Rahul Mahajan, were not complaining. In fact the son of late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan and now a reality show regular, Rahul went on to become the masseur of choice for tired ladies on the show.
Payal, who has been seen in films like 'Tauba Tauba' and 'Mazaa Mazaa', did make a determined assault for the Bigg Boss 2 crown. Whether it required getting into a mini skirt, hot pants or a bikini, the actress went all out to give viewers enough reasons to keep voting for her. She made no secret of her ambition in an interview given after her elimination from the show. I realised that I wanted to be noticed and wanted to be someone like Mallika Sherawat...People felt that I was hot. After a point I went with the flow. Love me or hate me but this was me, she was quoted as saying.
It is the stuff male fantasies are made of - two PYTs wrestling in the mud. That is exactly what MTV Splitsvilla had on offer for its viewers. And sure enough, Prianca and Bosky showed how seriously they took the Splitsvilla punchline 'Where Love is War'.
But despite having no mud, there was another catfight on MTV that got all down and dirty. On MTV Roadies 6.0 last year, the contestants were asked to wrestle in a traditional wrestling ring (akhara) for their immunity task. There would be two bouts, one for girls and the other for the guys. To eliminate an opponent, one would have to push them out of the ring, and the last man (or woman) standing would be the winner. While Suzanna chased Paulomi out of the ring, the fight between Tamanna and Natasha turned ugly. In the ensuing melee, both girls nearly tore each other's clothes off. That didn't make a fair fight, bit it certainly made great television.
On reality TV, few things succeed as well as putting beauties in a modelling boot camp. Ask Channel V, which has scorched the small screen with 'Get Gorgeouss', season after season. And when the girls on 'Get Gorgeous 5' got down to their first shoot with a male model, the results were bound to be quite sensational.
'The Fast and The Gorgeous' reality show on MTV has 20 good-looking girls fighting it out for the ultimate reward - to be the face of Force India F1 in the 2009 season. The winners of The Fast and the Gorgeous will get to travel the world with the team, host after-parties and appear in the F1 calendar, to be shot by Atul Kasbekar, the photographer for the Kingfisher calendar series. With so much at stake, the contestants don't mind showing off their pit-girl credentials on the show.
Indian reality television today is being pushed to the edge and nothing shows this better than 'Sarkaar ki Duniya' (SKD) on Real. From contestants gyrating in the rain to getting cozy under the sheets, SKD had plenty to keep telly voyeurs happy. Now it remains to be seen how far the rules can be bent without breaking them...
